Polypropylene

One indicates under the name of polypropylene, the threads and fibres to bases of propylene.

The propylene is extracted from petroleum, is transformed into polypropylene which is melted then spun, stalks are solidified by cooling then stretched.

Physical properties and textiles

Weightlessness :
: polypropylenes are fibres textiles the lightest at present known. They are the only ones whose density is lower than 1.

Solidity :
Very important in friction as for drives.

Touch :
Fat (as the paraffin).

Chemical properties

Action of the heat :

The polypropylene burns by melting with a flame, and by loosening a smell of paraffin.
The combustion leaves a residue in shape of ball.
Fusion takes place towards 175°C, but the textile softens in 125°C.

Action of the chemical agents:

The polypropylene is insensible in acids and in bases even concentrated and warm. It is rotproof, but it goes yellow quickly in the air, in the heat. One remedies this inconvenience by introducing anti-oxidants into fibres. It is necessary nevertheless to avoid exhibitions in the sun.

Practical characters

Destination :

Pure: carpets, bags of laundry, filters, blouses of work (blouses of laboratory), furnishing, seats of car, sporting articles , matelassages.

In mixture: :
With the wool: tracksuit, polos, T-shirts, socks;
With the cotton: underwear.
With polynosiques, chlorofibres.

Imported products in polypropylene can include MERAKLON ( Italy)

Maintenance :

Wash in the soapy tepid water.
Rinsing possible for the bleach if it is of short duration.
Drying faster than for quite other textile because absorption power is null.
Ironing useless but possible for sweet iron by interposing a wet Linen.
Cleaning in the usual solvents, in the cold, but fat tasks are firm.
